RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To explore cardiovascular autonomic regulation in Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) patients, using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis and neurophysiologic autonomic reflex tests, and determine relations and causal related factors of dysautonomia in SCA2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Heart rate variability indices for 5 min series of RR intervals were analyzed in 97 SCA2 patients, assessed quantitatively for somatic and autonomic nervous system complaints applying the International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale and Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease (SCOPA-AUT), respectively. Autonomic testing included: resting control, standing, Valsalva maneuver and deep breathing. RESULTS: Mean RR, long- and short-term variability indices and spectral density power (LF, HF) indices were lower in the patients group, whereas LF/HF ratio and LF (nu) were higher. Highly differences between groups were observed for seven diagnostic autonomic test indices. Significant correlations were found between different clinical and demographic indices and between clinical indices and some HRV indices. CONCLUSIONS: We confirm the presence of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in a large group of SCA2 patients.

RESUMO

A series of poly(alpha-n-alkyl beta-L-aspartates) which are nanophase self-assembled comb-like polymers has been studied by dielectric spectroscopy in a broad frequency range (10(-2) < or = nu < or = 3 x 10(6) Hz), with n-alkyls side chains of various lengths, 10 < or = n < or =18. In every member of the series the same relaxations were identified after the decomposition of the experimental isothermal trace in up to three peaks with relaxation times distributions. The strength, width and average relaxation time for all the relaxation modes were determined for each material. Besides the local low temperature, Arrhenius modes, two relaxation modes, alpha and alpha(PE), present a cooperative character whose dynamics are not affected by the side chains melting. The alpha(PE) relaxation is a polyethylene-like glass transition of the amorphous side chains and its dynamics is strongly dependent on the n value due to the increasing restrictions imposed by the self-assembled confinement. The strength of the alpha(PE) relaxation mode increases as the lateral chains loose their 2D order. The restricted chopstick motion of the rigid rods is thought to be the origin of the alpha mode; this motion is hindered at temperatures where the cage size decreases as a result of the increasing disorder with temperature.

RESUMO

This article reports on methabenzthiazuron [1-(1,3-benzothiazol-2-yl)-1,3-dimethylurea] (MBT) adsorption process on six agricultural allophanic and nonallophanic soils. The effect of amendment with exogenous organic matter was also studied. Adsorption kinetic fits an hyperbolic model. MBT adsorption reached an apparent equilibrium within 2 h and followed a second-order reaction. The maximum adsorbed amounts for natural soils ranged from 32 to 145 microg g(-1). Rate constants were considered relatively low (0.27-1.5 x 10(-4) [microg g(-1)](1-n) s-1); the slow process was attributed to a combined effect of difussion and adsorption. MBT adsorption fits the Freundlich model with r values > or =0.998 at P < or = 0.001 significance levels. Kf and Freundlich exponents (l/n) ranged from 5.3 to 82.1 cm3 g(-1) and from 0.66 to 0.73, respectively. Kf values for soils with a low organic matter content were lower than that obtained from the only typical allophanic soil derived from volcanic ash under study. Lineal regression analysis between Kf and organic matter content of nonallophanic soils gave a correlation coefficient of 0.980 (P = 0.02). Dispersion of Kd values together with close values of K(OM) indicate that organic matter (OM) was the principal component responsible for MBT adsorption in unamended soils. Addition of peat decreased soil pH and increased adsorption capacity for allophanic and nonallophanic soils. Kinetic experiments showed enhancements of Xmax values and lower rate constants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Low blood Se levels have been previously shown in normal pregnancies (third trimester) and significantly lower levels in patients with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), in Finland and in Chile, suggesting that a low or marginal dietary availability of Se may contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a temporal change in plasma concentration of Se, and seasonal fluctuations in plasma concentrations of Se, Zn and Cu, could coincide with changes in the prevalence of ICP. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study was done including 21 ICP patients, 98 women in the third trimester of a normal pregnancy, 29 non-pregnant women, and also 13 individuals (seven non-pregnant women and six men) who had been studied 9 years before. Plasma Se, Zn and Cu were measured by atomic spectroscopy. Plasma Se levels in the present study were compared to the results obtained 5 to 7 years before, employing identical methodology in similar population samples. RESULTS: Plasma Se concentrations in non-pregnant women were higher than in the previous study: 1.43+/-0.34 micromol/l vs 0.85+/-0.13; p<0.001. In comparison to non-pregnant women, normal pregnancies near term had lower plasma levels of Se: 1.08+/-0.25 micromol/l; p<0.01, and Zn: 17.90+/-3.61 micromol/l vs 19.71+/-3.21; p<0.05, but higher plasma levels of Cu: 34.35+/-7.12 micromol/l vs 20.62+/-3.34; p<0.01. In normal pregnancies, plasma Se concentration was significantly higher in summer (1.34+/-0.19 micromol/l) than in the other seasons, while Zn and Cu diminished. Similar to previous studies, ICP patients had significantly lower Se plasma levels than normal pregnancies: 0.94+/-0.12 micromol/l, p<0.05, and Cu levels were significantly higher: 50.80+/-7.02 micromol/l, p<0.01. Cu plasma levels correlated with the biochemical severity of the disease. Zn did not change in ICP. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows that the decrease in the prevalence of ICP in Chile during the last decade coincides with an increase in plasma Se levels. Its lower incidence during summer coincides with a higher plasma Se concentration in summer than in other seasons, as observed in normal pregnancies.
